Every choice echoes across worlds. Freedom or Chaos; Stability or Control?
What book do you think everyone should read?
Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. It is so beautifully written. The characters are so rich and full of life. Every detail and nuance of the life of the main character can be felt, smelled or tasted.
Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
Fantasy, Sci-fi, dystopian with a splash of mystery
Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
I put on my headphones, turn on my ‘Rediscover Avicii’ playlist and let the words flow. I have a sit/stand desk and often I dance while I’m writing, especially during a particularly exciting scene.
Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?
I’d love it if I could focus on just one, but sometimes other characters barge in just demand to be heard. Often times, I wake up in the morning and have scenes or plots in my head for another book. I have a growing collection of story scraps I want to get back to and flesh out, but right now Bex is my demanding master.
What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?
I started out as a complete pantser. I just wrote in the flow. No planning, no plotting, no outline. I was just as surprised as the characters when certain things happened in the story. Now I use a hybrid approach. I plan out the highlights of the story and then fill in the details as I write. I also use a spreadsheet to capture each chapters key points and that has helped when editing to identify where a change might impact other parts of the story.
What are common traps for aspiring writers?
Editing to perfection. Trying to come up with the perfect turn of phrase. Never feeling like what you’ve written is good enough. I’ve met so many really talented writers who are just stuck in the editing phase. They’ve penned 50 or 60 thousand words and are agonizing over a single sentence or paragraph. They are almost become paralyzed and are afraid to have an editor help them because they might change something. You’ve got to learn to trust yourself and accept feedback if you want to grow and get your story published.
How long on average does it take you to write a book?
Book 1 took me nearly four years to write, edit, edit some more, and publish. Book 2 took me ten months as I’ve got a solid process and discipline. I’m expecting Book 3 will take a similar amount of time. I’ve got the outline done and have started the first few chapters, now I just need to schedule with my editor so I have a deadline to hold myself accountable to deliver.
