Mazu's Hatchling Adventure Part Three...

Hello riders. Today I am featuring the third installment into "Mazu's Hatchling Adventure." This is a short story I have been working on for several weeks now or months give or take. I hope you enjoy this little snippet between the elk and Mazu as they chat and Mazu gets ready for the next step of his adventure. I should have a longer piece next time. And I look forward to bringing it to you again at the end of August. Happy reading everyone. :)

****

Mazu's Hatchling Adventure

Part 3
by: K.M. Jenkins

Mazu gazed at the elk in astonishment. He never knew creatures existed. But he wasn’t exactly sure what creatures existed in the world because of a lack of knowledge. Slowly he slid forward as the elk lowered its head to let Mazu graze its nose against its.

A moment of connection happened between them. He could clearly see some images from the elk’s life dance across his vision. The elk didn’t seem frightened by this thought and slowly receded from his touch.

“What was that?” Mazu asked bewildered.

The elk blinked and chewed on a piece of grass. He seemed deep in thought for a moment until he reached out with his own mind to Mazu will a smile flashing in his dark eyes.

“That my dear hatchling is memory gazing. I let you see some of my life here in the woods of the elder tree to help you find your way.”

He blinked in surprise.

“I thought I could only see images from the bond I have with my mother?”

The elk chewed thoughtfully on its grass and nodded its head.

“Yes, that is true. But memory gazing is allowed between creatures that have similar magical attributes. It allows us to communicate on a deeper level. You will be more aware of this ability as time goes on and you strengthen your bond with your rider.”

The word rider felt odd to him. He didn’t know what a rider was, and he wasn’t sure the elk would give him more information than he already had. It seemed like the elk was itching to get away to head farther inland to get away from something. Mazu couldn’t help but feel sadness creep in. He wanted his new friend to stay at his side for a while longer. But even he knew that some things you can’t change with wild beasts.

“What’s a rider?”

The elk looked at him, surprised.

“Doesn’t your mother have a rider?”

He thought back to the images of the world she had shown him. And he realized that there were always two beings that stood out as important to her besides him. There was a large, male-looking bronze dragon that she called Katzu and a scrawny, elf-eared man with long black hair she called Blake.

“I know my father by memories but I'm not sure about the elven man that seems to keep company with my mother.”

“Aww…that would be her rider.”

He cocked his head to the side when a yell came from the north end of the forest. The elk’s ears shot back and his skittered in place. Mazu couldn’t help but feel curious about the noise; everything was so new to him. But the elk didn’t seem like it wanted to stick around anymore.

“I’m sorry hatchling but my time here is done. It is time to leave this place. If you were wise you would return to your mother’s side.”

“Why? What was that?”

“That would be the humans… you should avoid them until you are ready. Your mother wouldn’t want you among them so young.”

He snorted. His mother wouldn’t mind if he checked out the noise. She was sleeping after all. The elk was only a chicken and could face the fact that curiosity was far more interesting when you found the answers yourself.

The elk stomped its hoof and turned.

“Fare thee well, hatchling. I pray the gods will guide your path safely home. Please stay clear of the village encampment. Times have changed but even humans are still tricky folk to trust.”

Mazu bounced his body in confirmation of his request. The elk dashed into the trees westbound from the village, seeking to put distance between them. Mazu turned to head back towards his mother’s lair when heard footsteps nearby. He froze as a large man with a metal stick with a blunt blade stepped out in front of him. The man didn’t notice Mazu, so he remained still, waiting to see what the strange creature would do next.

The man looked around with his hand towards his eyes to shade the sun from his eyesight. Then he turned back and yelled something over his shoulder. After a moment passed, he turned back towards the way he came and Mazu found himself curious enough to follow at a short distance.

He knew he was breaking his word with the elk for not returning to his mother, but something told him to follow this man. There was a reason he was in the forest and brought to Mazu’s spot. And who was Mazu to deny his fate if it meant to follow this man to it. At least I hope I don’t get into too much trouble, or mother will have my hide.

Stay tuned for Part 4 Coming in August!

August 2026: End of the Month Check-In with KM Jenkins

Hello riders. It's been a month of craziness. I have been working my butt off on my PA side of my business and working towards my first Kickstarter launch date. The plan was to launch August 11th when I hit 100 Followers, but that might get delayed. Not because I am lower than 100 followers, I am happy to state that I made my goal. But the proof for my paperback and hardcover haven't arrived in the mail due to some delayed issues with the designer. However, I am hoping to have it this week or next to start creating reels and videos to share with everyone.

However that has put a damper on my launch date, but I am struggling with my story on Kickstarter for the official Kickstarter Campaign page. I'm not sure I am loving my graphics so I might do something different or look at other Kickstarters to get inspiration.

Today I released another update for my followers on Kickstarter. I revealed the early backer rewards that won't show up on the prelaunch page until next week. This way you get an idea of what you can get for a discounted rate when you back the project early on in the campaign. Want to see what they are head over to my prelaunch page click NOTIFY ME ON LAUNCH and head to the updates section to see what I have in store.

As for writing I have been working on my short story for my blog here for you all. I am going to be a day late with the story this month. Didn't have time to write everything I wanted and plan to do that here over the next couple of days. Mazu's Hatchling Adventure will get a third part for you all to enjoy and I am hoping to release it either on Thursday or Friday this week.

When it comes to my other writing I haven't accomplished much. I did manage to finish the re-writes for "A Father's Protection," and started "An Elf, a Dragon, and a God's Intervention." I am hoping to have that one done in the next week and move on to "Bonds of Friendship" after that.

Doing these rewrites will delay my ability to deliver the final books to backers on my Kickstarter, but my writing style has changed and ideas on how to make the stories even better have bloomed in my mind. This I hope will make the book more appealing to new readers.

As for that nothing else has happened besides everyday life. Things have been crazy and I am always on the run. What about you? Did you have a productive August? Are you working towards anything fun for your future? Share your answers in the comments below.

****

Father Sebastian has found a home in St. Augusta College. But when that home is threatened by a student, questions arise in his own beliefs.

If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

So, I actually could spend a day with either Emilia or Sebastian. Emilia would be a fun time. She is smart, sassy, and artistic. It would be easy to enjoy a day with her talking about deep topics over coffee and painting. I would want to know what she sees around me and what she thinks I could fix or expand.

Sebastian is a cinnamon roll who needs therapy badly. I'd want to take him to therapy, have a spa day, and then go to an expo on religious art or religious studies. He loves learning new things and I think it'd be fun to expand his belief system and learn something new with him.

It's actually interesting to see how much the two of them are similar but very different.

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?

I was originally going to go BIG. Like, drugs and demonic possession. But, my characters had other plans. I knew I wanted a priest who was devoted to his position and faith and I knew the love interest would be a tortured artist of sorts. But, Emilia had other plans. She didn't like losing her autonomy to addiction and possession. She wanted her voice to be loud and clear.

Once I changed Emilia, everything settled to what Sacred Salvation is today. Sebastian became a sweet guy with a lot of emotional and physical baggage twisted into religious abuse. Emilia had her own emotional and mental baggage, but kept pushing back against the abuse she was experiencing in St. Augusta.

Honestly, it felt as if they made who they were more than me.

What inspired you to write this book?

Honestly, it was the influx of Christian Nationalists and the spiritual abuse that comes with it. It was a hefty subject and I have no doubt I only briefly touched that, but my main story was inspired by that. I would like to one day do more on that subject but I love Sacred Salvation for what it is and wouldn't change it.

What can we expect from you in the future?

There are a lot of projects I want to get done in the future. I want to bridge out into horror and add more dark romance under my belt. I also want to do some urban fantasy, but I actually have a few things coming out this year too.

In October, I'm working alongside other authors for a series of monster erotica novellas. I have two coming out that month and both will be set in the same dystopian world where the climate has changed so much that the old gods have returned to reclaim Earth, and with it, take human lovers. My first novella is The Kraken's Consort where a woman is chosen as a sacrificial bride to a Kraken. If you know the Eros and Psyche mythos, think of a dystopian retelling of that only with spice, tentacles, and an Eldritch sea god.

The second novella is titled The Serpent's Blessing where a person is chosen by a Naga to join its ranks. I'm still working on that novella, so I don't have specifics narrowed out, but it will be spicy as well. The novellas are part of a series called Kinktober Reloaded where there is a new novella released every day in October. The novellas are not in the same world as the other, just my two are connected.

I am also working on a cozy mystery titled Death at Gracie Manor. It is about Katrina Webster who has renovated a Queen Anne Victorian manor into an inn. Days before the opening, her only employee (and friend) is found dead. The town is gossiping saying the ghost of Gracie Manor has taken another victim, but Katrina knows there's something more going on. After all, the lavender she smells doesn't seem like it's from an evil ghost.

There is also a charity anthology I'm part of in December for LGBTQ+. It is a Christmas romance anthology. But, aside from all that, everything else is in the air. I'm still debating on what I'm going to do next.

The Mages with Tarzinëa & the Powers they Wield

In the world of Tarzinëa there has been a structure for Mages since the dawn of time. Before the council was born thought magic was used to create The SwordMaster Coliseum. Only the strongest were able to become full SwordMasters while the others were forced into servitude to other lords and ladies. This didn't sit well with some of the mages that started to form ranks as the time of SwordMasters came to an end. A great war started between magic users that demanded to be free to do as they wish with their own powers. But after the war a structure was obtained to help create a balance and that is how the council of mages came into effect. They were made up of one white robe mage, one black robe mage, one red robe mage, one green robe mage, and one brown robe mage. Each mage held different abilities and they all worked to keep a harmony amongst the ranks.

Below you will learn about each mage in particular and what kind of abilities they possess.

White Robe Mages

White robe mages are at the top of the hierarchy and are usually elvish in nature. They are able to create light magic that can fight back the darkness. They tend to learn how to use earthen magic like the Green Robe mages but they tend to keep to themselves. There are only a few human white robe mages in the history of the world.

Black Robe Mages

Black Robe Mages are the second in hierarchy when it comes to power. They tend to dabble in the dark arts and try to bring demons into the world to do their bidding. After the war ended restrictions were put on them for what they were aloud to practice in the dark arts. This has created resentment and hostility between the different ranks of mages.

Red Robe Mages

Red Robe Mages are the third in hierarchy. They are among the top three that sit at the council of mages table. They are known for creating a balance between the white and black mages. There strengths are war magic and fire. These mages are known to be destructive and always try to side with whoever is the winning side in conflicts that arise.

Green Robe Mages

Green Robe Mages are looked down upon by the council of mages. But the people in the worlds beyond their barriers love them. These mages are full healers and are used regularly throughout the kingdom on a daily basis. They also have a high rank among royalty and influence policies that shape the world but they are looked down upon by the council of mages due to there lack of skill with only being able to use healing talent only.

Brown Robe Mages

Brown Robe Mages are considered hermits among their mage companions. They tend to keep to the woods and work alongside animals and the forest. Many are able to shape shift into animals with magic or commune with beasts of nature through mind speech. They love nature and hate people with a passion. Also have a hard time within the school system at Firefly Academy due to the lack of social skills and always wanted to be away from humans in general.

Mystics in Hell
A Heroes in Hell Anthology

Genre: Dark Fantasy Anthology

From The Abode of Woe by A.L. Butcher

Paradise’s dim light grew ever dimmer as the hell-lights began to glare with the blue glow of sulfur. It was an unforgiving light for the unforgiven. Word had got around, and crowds had begun to gather for the evening’s entertainment. Calchas had started a book on the outcome of the battle, and the diablos were rolling in.

“Two to One for the Pig Man!” yelled a grifter clad in the sharpest suit of the evening.

“Seven to Four for the Prince!” bellowed another voice, shrill in the crowd.

Kevin the fiend grinned. He was having the time of his unlife; he’d read the small-print.

“Are they ready?” Calchas asked, eying the large and sinister cloth-covered mounds on opposing sides of the temple.

“Yep. Ready for mayhem, master.” A smiling fiend is not something to stir the heart with confidence or joy and Calchas sobered. He wondered if he should feel guilty, but he had enough of that to last a thousand lifetimes and these New Dead had brought it on themselves. At least that is what he told himself and Cassandra.

“Ego fighting ego will bring no good for either. A temple built in haste to honor mere vanity and lies will surely fall to dust.” Cassandra stared at the mounds, hoping these fire-spiting death machines would not bring them all to the Undertaker’s door. Were they too close? She closed her eyes and let her mind wander.

“Will we be punished for this venture?” He’d asked, thinking too late they may have erred and voicing both their fears. He hoped nothing would backfire; plans in hell oft went awry. And he knew that sooner or later he’d pay the price for this deceit.

“This is Hades. Punishment is inherent. But I think not . . . at least not on this day. ‘Rue thy former life, and revel in thy afterlife, for thou art damned.’ Is that not the advice you once gave me? We are the damned. We must survive as we may. But those infernal and wicked weapons of the new-dead — Surely the walls of Ilium would have fallen on the first day.” She paused, “Would we have fought with such demon-weapons of war?”

Calchas gazed over to the two looming cloth-bound shapes. “Probably. Priam and Agamemnon would have found some means to destroy one another, no doubt. Man’s capacity for war outweighs his capacity for reason — and this place is full of the testimonials to that.”

“They will fall in dust as vain men are wont to do.” Cassandra told him.

“They won’t go through with it. It would be suicide. That building will fall down in the next hell-storm,” Calchas replied, doubtful.

They’d watched the crowd assemble from a reasonable distance. “Pack up. In case. And I will try to steer the mayhem from our door to be on the safe side, should the range of those war-weapons be enough to hit us. Make sure you are careful where you stand.

“Look there’s old Assisi. Out for the entertainment, along with everyone else by the looks. Let’s see — drinks are half-price.” Calchas would not let this opportunity pass.

Cassandra nodded, “Where did you get the fire-spitters?”

“Che Guevara owes me a favor. It might be useful to keep one—just in case. How hard can they be to use? Look, come there are our two brave heroes.” Calchas separated himself from Cassandra, still in the guise of the department man, and wandered over to the two Prophets.

“So, gentlemen, are we ready to settle this? Remember the winner gets control of that site, should it still be standing. The loser, or losers . . .will have more immediate issues to deal with.” Calchas motioned to the nearer of the covered shapes. “Who would like Big Bertha?”

The Reverend Henry Prince stared doubtfully at the shape. “That’s not a sword, or a firearm.”

“Give that make a Heck-Cookie!” Kevin chortled. He’d been milling and warming up the onlookers. With a flourish he tugged the cloth away — to reveal a howitzer, pointing towards the Temple of Woe. It was an evil-looking device, as were many man-made machines of death. “Humans, they do like to kill one another in all sorts of inventive ways! Welcome Big Bertha. She’s a friendly girl!”

“And the other?” Smyth-Pigott asked, his voice tremulous.

They walked across to a lower-slung shape. “Gentlemen, meet Roaring Meg, the deadly maiden of the English Roundheads,” Kevin chuckled.

“Not your era, I suppose, but they do the job. They are primed for combat. Meg has helpers: she fires but one ball at a time, yet she’s a fiery lass and one of the more knowledgeable operatives of hell has evened the odds.” Calchas held his palm out, containing dice. “Whoever rolls snake-eyes gets first choice, but Meg is a little slower, and older, and thus she fires first.”

“What happens if we refuse this ridiculous plan?” Henry Prince could not take his eyes from the cannon.

“Refuse? I wasn’t aware that was an option.” Calchas feigned surprise.

Kevin murmured something in Calchas’ ear, “My associate says it is an option but if a refusal is forthcoming then all rights are revoked to build now and for infernity, Sentence will be the six-hundred and sixty-five years of cleaning Perish sewers, and you must publicly affirm your rival as the true Chosen One, the true heir and the ultimate seer. And as both are equally guilty you will have to work together, and your women too, forever. If both refuse, then it must be done at exactly the same time. Whomever speaks first is deemed the greater coward.”

Mystics in Hell is the latest volume in the notorious Heroes in Hell series of anthologies and novels created by Janet Morris.

A Frame of Mind by Janet Morris & Chris Morris
Kit Marlowe treks back from exile, where he has encountered three witches. Carrying a skull which he found on a blasted heath, he arrives at the Globe, where Satan and the angel of death accost him. At their displeasure, he’s banished once more, this time to return instantly via the powers of the Fates. Satan meets him at a cast party and decrees that Kit not only will spy for him, but play Banquo, beheaded in each subsequent performance of Macbeth.

The Come Right Inn by Andrew P. Weston
Where we meet up with one of Satan’s most secretive agents. A charming woman with a finger—and most other body parts—in every pie. She’s bewitching, beguiling, and bedeviled to be sure, but won’t think twice about skinning you alive if you cross her.

Abode of Woe by A.L. Butcher
When the self-proclaimed anti-messiah builds a temple on their doorstep and ruins business, Calchas and Cassandra look to some devious means to bring down the walls. Dueling mystics and misinformation bring mayhem to the underworld.

Fool’s Gold by S.E. Lindberg
A tale of the Egyptian god of mysticism, Thoth, who seeks conspirators to retrieve the Philosopher’s Stone; with it, Thoth could usurp Satan’s control of the realm of Duat. Taking up the charge is Howard Carter, infamous antiquarian and tomb raider, and the disgraced evolutionist Ernst Haeckel. They discover that King Midas’s alchemical ability to transmute flesh into gold relies on the stolen stone, and Midas is producing Hell’s new gastro-currency: buttcoin. They infiltrate the Mortuary Mint and sabotage the currency’s production. Instead of returning the stone to Thoth, the duo uses it to build up their own fortune. The auditors of Hell, namely the First and Second of the Sibitti, police the matter.

The True Believer by  Lou Antonelli
Few national leaders of the 20th century had as much of a negative and controversial impact on history as Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd, prime minister of South Africa from 1958 to 1966, when he was assassinated. Commonly referred to in South Africa as “Dr.” Verwoerd, he had a PhD in psychology, and went down in history as The Man Who Invented Apartheid. Now in Hell, Dr. Verwoerd refuses to acknowledge his infernal fate and gets a special visit to set him straight.

By Any Means Necessary by Gustavo Bondoni
Umberto Eco knows he’s in Hell; the suffering and multiple deaths that never kill him permanently are more than enough of a clue for a man of his learning.  But when he gets forcibly recruited by Nazi Commando Otto Skorzeny to prove the theories of one of history’s greatest charlatans, he thinks things can’t get any worse.  He’s wrong.  Hell can always get worse.

Excalibur by Tom Barczak
When dealing with the harsh reality of the Afterlife: Hell can be hard. But Rasputin has something even harder, and Lafayette Ronald Hubbard desperately needs it if he is going to pull off the greatest magic trick Hell has ever known.

On The Run by Michael H. Hanson
Tells of Sufi mystic Rumi, Zen Buddhist Dōgen, and Charlatan Spiritualist Mina Crandon using their new-found magics on the grandest of all quests, to find powerful talismans that will allow them to escape Hell itself.

The Sorcerous Apprentice by  Andrew P. Weston
Daemon Grim learns new tricks from an old dog. And just as well. There’s a fallen saint to bring to heel, and she’s not known for playing ball . . . crystal or otherwise.

The Colossus of Hell by Joe Bonadonna
Doctor Victor Frankenstein and computer scientist Alan Turing want to build a cyborg. Quasimodo wants to win the hand of the French fortune teller, Marie Anne Lenormand. Rasputin and Cagliostro want to open an exclusive, private club. And a mysterious damned soul, known only as the Orange Ogre, wants revenge against anyone in Hell who ever cheated or betrayed him, laughed at and humiliated him, or even ignored him—especially His Satanic Majesty himself.

Strange Arts by Janet Morris and Chris Morris
In a Tower cell, Marlowe’s head struggles to regain consciousness and rejoin his body. Here he finds his Elizabethan spymaster, Walsingham, waiting with J the Merciful and three mysterious Sisters. After painfully stitching together his body and soul, the five entreat him to join their most secret conspiracy.
