Mazu's Hatchling Adventure — Part 2!

Greetings riders. Today I have the second part of Mazu's Hatchling Adventure. He meets a new friend in the woods and discovers a few knew things that he never seen before. I ended up having part 2 to long so I had to split it into 2 parts again. I hope you don't mind and enjoy this snippet inside this story.

****

Mazu's Hatchling Adventure
Part Two
by: K.M. Jenkins

Darkness. All he saw was darkness. There was a presence, though. A female voice. It called to him occasionally. It was warm and bright. Her voice calmed him when panic set in and all he thought about was breaking free.

Time meant nothing to him. His days blurred into weeks within the small sphere that held him prisoner. He did not know how time worked; everything seemed the same, no matter what he did. But that voice was always talking and giving him pictures into the world. Colors would take root in his mind and images appeared. The voice would tell him what each thing was and how excited they were about him one day seeing it for himself. He longed for the day the female spoke of, but it seemed to never come.

As the days grew longer and summer came upon them the sights from the sky infiltrated his mind the most. She loved flying and showing him the world from the eyes of a dragon. Each day he grew stronger and the connection to the female amplified. However, something else tugged at his mind telling him it was almost time.

Almost time for what though? He thought. Dread would fill him all over again when the images of the world would disappear. He struggled to see on his own and all he saw was a stone wall filled with darkness. Why can’t I get free? His restlessness surrendered to his will and the day came when everything changed.

A crack chipped away on the outer wall of his prison. It grew with each movement he made. One claw slid across the surface, forcing the shell to scatter at his touch. He felt glee for the first time. Happiness filled him at the eagerness of finally being free.

He raked his claws across the crack and it fell further away. Light broke through the darkness and blinded him for the first time. Mazu blinked away the tears. Then he plunged his head through the crack and rolled from his nest onto the earthen floor with a thud. He shook himself off and unraveled his flailing limbs. Took a moment to collect himself before he took in his surroundings.

The first thing his eyes locked on was the boulders that surrounded the clearing that he called home. He remembered these trees from the female’s mind. She showed him everything in front of him to prepare the way. But he didn’t care, besides the fact that he could breathe fresh air for the first time in his life. “I’m free!” he yelled into the void. But his mouth only made a gurgling noise in his stead. He reached out to the female voice only to turn and freeze. There was another dragon lying near his nest. He crouched to the earthen floor and waited to see what the fellow dragon would do. But from the look of it, she was sleeping. Then he slid over to her to get a better look.

Mazu was inches from her face and rested his nose against hers. Then he felt the connection that was in his mind grow. This was the female who gave him all the memories of the outside world. She was the one who kept him sane while he wanted to go mad. That is when he figured out who she was. She was his mother, and that is why they were bonded. He felt warmth form deep in his chest as he looked at her for the first time. She was beautiful. But she wasn’t the only thing he wanted to see now that freedom called.

Mazu turned his head towards the massive trees that circled the clearing where he found his home. He crawled over to the trunk of one and sniffed it. It didn’t smell that wonderful, but it brought character to his home. Wonder why they are so big? Are they all this big? He wondered.

Once his curiosity with the tree subsided, he looked around to see that there were large rock formations that surrounded the nest and held things in place. Mazu didn’t know if it was intentional to have the rocks locking him within as his shell was broken away at his feet. But he didn’t stick around to find out.

He slid across the ground, sniffing the dirt as he went. A gust of wind blew dirt in his face, and he turned his head to take in his mother sleeping soundly on a large rock formation that curved with her body. She was enormous. Mazu was tiny compared to her, and she was asleep with her eyes closed. Guess that is my cue to adventure, he thought.

Once he reached the far-off tree that looked different from the others, Mazu froze. He wondered to the base of the tree and sniffed it to take in its scent. However, it didn’t smell the same as the other ones nearby. This one was special. He could tell from the energy coming off it. Mazu contemplated what it could mean until he heard a noise farther off into the wooded area.

“What was that?”

His eyes peered around the tree but didn’t see anything. “Guess that means I have to check it out,” he chuckled to himself. Mazu scooted back on his hind legs and perched himself high enough to climb over the enormous roots at the base of the tree. They were as thick as his thighs as he jumped over the top and landed with a thud on the other side.

Quickly, he looked around to make sure he didn’t wake or alert anyone to his presence. Then he moved forward into the brush, looking for any sign of life. It was a few yards in when he saw a bush bounce around. A small creature jumped out in front of him. When it locked eyes on him, it’s eyes grew wide as balls and it made a screeching sound. Then turned and ran away with a white cotton tail jumping up and down on his rear end.

“What in hell-fire was that?” he pondered.

Mazu sniffed the ground where the creature stood moments before but he didn’t recognize the smell. Probably because he never seen one of them before. He wanted to see another one again one day. “I wonder why it was so scared? I did nothing threatening.”

Another noise came from far off in the distance drawing Mazu’s attention forward. He stuck his nose to the ground like a normal grey hound and started wondering what he would find.

It came out of nowhere. A creature so big it made him feel tiny-tiny. It stood on long, thick legs with grey stone feet he assumed were hooves. The creature had wide white-brown sticks coming out of its head and a weird short tail that flicked up when it looked around. Mazu stayed in the underbrush, knowing his presence would alert the creature and send it fleeing into the woods. “For some reason, I scare these things in the woods.”

Mazu lowered his belly to the dirt and peered through the long grass in wonder. The enormous nose of the creature lowered to eat the grass. It chopped away not realizing that Mazu was nearby. He wanted to know what kind of creature it was but kept himself quiet, hoping to get to watch it a moment longer. Then he remembered how his mother would send images and words to him when he was in his shell.

Then Mazu reached out to the creature to see what kind of mind it possessed. As he connected with the creature its head shot straight and dashed around in all directions. It knew someone was watching him now and Mazu hated alerting the creature but he had to know what it was. But what surprised him the most was the intelligence the creature possessed.

“Hello…is someone there?”

Mazu blinked back surprise. The creature responded to his tug on his mind faster than Mazu was expecting. Perhaps it is a magical creature such as myself, he pondered. The elk turned its head towards Mazu’s direction and its nostrils flared. He could smell danger faster than he could find it. The elk stopped its hoof in irritation and reached out with a blast of mind magic and slammed hard into Mazu’s inner thoughts.

“I know you are there! Show yourself!”

“Only if you promise not to run…” Mazu stated softly.

The elk snorted, stopped its right hind foot and tilted its head.

“Fine. Come out and I won’t run.”

Mazu felt excitement as he slid forward from under the tall grass. The elk stepped back as it tilted its head to take him in. It didn’t run like it promised but it didn’t seem thrilled with his appearance.

“You’re a hatchling…”

Mazu snorted at him.

“Yes, I’m a hatchling, but what are you?” Mazu laughed.

The elk snorted and thrashed its head at his reply. Then he looked Mazu in the eye and seemed to smile in his own way.

“It’s been a long time since hatchlings have been seen in this world. Forgive me. You took me by surprise...”

“Yes…yes. But what are you?” Mazu pushed.

The elk tilted his head and snorted again.

“Aww…yes. I’m what humans call an elk.”

Magic...the Different Mage Classes!

Inside the world of Tarzinëa you will find all kinds of magic in the works. This can be from creatures born with it to powerful gods and goddesses or mages. Today I am going to break down the different levels of the magic class system and how they are ranked due to learning expertise.

1. Apprentice - When a mage starts lessons in magic they begin their journey as an apprentice. In my short story "A Forbidden Friendship," Prince Billy is considered at the journeyman level. But he started his journey at Firefly Academy as an apprentice. He has to learn the basics before he could rank among the Journeymen in year two classes.

2. Journeyman - This is usually for second year students at Firefly Academy. They have learned the basics and are starting to find their strength among the different magic secs. Prince Billy gets to go on the Journeyman quest when he is a second year student. This means he has to use his magic in the real world and keep himself a live on his own merits for one entire year on the road. He is to help those in need and report back to the council of mages regularly if he sees the misuse of magic.

Along this journey he meets Kÿla in the Forest of Ferrês. They become inseparable and she decides to leave the forest to travel with Billy. As his time on the road comes to an end they head back to Ëlerya the city of mages where Firefly Academy is hidden among the lands.

3. Adept - This is for third year students that have managed to finish their journeyman quest and fulfilled all the required lessons to get to this level. When the students hit this level they are divided off by their strengths. This could mean that if they are strong in healer magic they are charged with learning healer magic from the master adepts. Prince Billy is at this state in my upcoming series I have planned for him and Kÿla. He will be put in a specific class structure that will lead him to become a mage like know other. But I won't give to much detail about this since I haven't written it yet. :)

4. Master Adept - This is the final stage for mages. Not all mages get to this stage because only certain class structures are allowed to become master adepts. Billy is in one of the classes that can become a master adept like his grandfather Christophé. But first he has to finish his fourth year of school before that will become a reality. But even though mages make it through the fourth year of classes they don't earn this title until they have been out in the real world practicing magic to earn this high mark of achievement.

There are a lot of details in how the magical world is structure inside Tarzinëa. This post only touches on one subject matter for now. As time goes on I will share more details on how the world is broken down and how each person becomes more than what they are at the beginning of the journey.

I hope you all enjoyed this post and look forward to more that will come in the future. If you haven't read Prince Billy's story: "A Forbidden Friendship," you can grab it HERE. Heir of Providence
Special Collector's Edition
by: Matthew Romeo

The war ends here. The epic finale of this multi-POV Star Wars-inspired science fantasy with gem-powered armor and impossible choices.

****

Are you a fan of science fantasy stories with multi-POVs, a fun ensemble cast, advanced armor powered by magic, political intrigue, wartime dilemmas, and quests to save the world? Well look no further, because The Maven Knight Chronicles is the series for you!

This project is intended to revise and re-format Book 3 of The Maven Knight Chronicles. The novel is due for an overhaul on a technical level because there are so many new tools that I've discovered since its original publication in 2021.

I want to give readers, new and old, the BEST version of this book. That's where this Kickstarter comes into play...

This campaign will allow me to produce a special polished version of The Maven Knight: Heir of Providence in ebook, paperback, and hardcover formats. The interior will include:
  • A world map.
  • Tinted chapter pages.
  • Chapter header artwork.
  • A never-before-seen bonus chapter.
  • New back section art pieces in full color.
And for Kickstarter backers only, there are bundles that will come with an exclusive digital short story, character photo cards, an author audio commentary, and hardcovers with sprayed edges and stencils.

Self-publishing has seen a massive boom these past few years and it’s an ever-expanding market. When I first self-published in 2018, I wasn’t aware of half the tools available for indie authors. Platforms like Kickstarter allow us to bring our stories to life, and it’s only because of supporters like you that makes this possible.

Kickstarter allows the author to retain 80% of the funds rather than the dwindling 15% we get through Amazon or other publishers.

It also makes this more than just a simple transaction; YOU are part of bringing this book to life. Kickstarter allows me to truly show my gratitude and make these tiers as consumer-friendly as I can.

I hope you join the journey!

Matthew Romeo

"City at the Edge of Time," by: Janet & Chris Morris — Book Tour & Giveaway!

Hello riders. It's been a week since our last bookish weekend. Hoping your ready for some fun book tours and bookish posts this weekend. What is something unique/quirky about you?

We are songwriters; You can hear our MCA album Christopher Morris Band on Soundcloud.com/Christopher-Morris and Chris’ more recent work on N1M.com/ChristopherCrosbyMorris.

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

Janet wrote her first novel in 1975 and Chris was the first one to read and comment on it. Their marriage survived. A routine emerged where Chris would read aloud all the new drafts and make edits on the spot. After a few books Chris’ ideas became frequent enough that we agreed he should have credit for writing, whereas before we had kept separate Janet’s storytelling and Chris’ songwriting. The rest, as they say is history.

Who is your hero and why?

Heraclitus of Ephesus, a pre-socratic philosopher, whose Cosmic Fragments foreshadow our knowledge of reality and how to perceive it. Among his precepts is the statement that change alone is unchanging. We’ve worked Heraclitus’ fragments in here and there throughout our books.

Which of your novels can you imagine being made into a movie?

All of them. We write cinematically, our books are vivid adventures written without knowing how they end, perfect for suspenseful films.  I, the Sun, The Sacred Band, Outpassage and M.E.D.U.S.A. are particularly suited for cinema. The Threshold Series is a feast of opportunities for today’s special effects creators.

What inspired you, to write City at the Edge of Time?

We love horses, history and philosophy, so why not an ancient cavalry unit made up of paired fighters led by a centuries-old warrior sage with a god in his head? Tempus and his Sacred Band of Stepsons are cast in a moment stretching across all of recorded history.

Who designed your book covers?

Most of our covers, including City at the Edge of Time are realized by Roy Mauritsen, a gifted graphic artist.

Advice to writers?

As for advice to writers, here is all we know: write the story you want to read. Start at the beginning, go to the end, and stop. Seriously. From start to finish you must inhabit the construct in a manner that makes the reader choose to continue. If you, as the writer, can’t feel what it’s like being there, your readers won’t either. So close your eyes, look at your feet where they are standing on the story’s ground; tell us what you see. Tell us what you hear. Ask at the end of each paragraph, ‘what happens next?’. If you lose touch with it, wait until you’re back inside it. Tell the story that comes only to you, and from you, to us.

Which Character from the Tales of Tarza Series is your Favorite?

Hello riders. I am sitting around the fire, waiting for you to join me. There is roasted rabbit and some carrots sitting in a pot on the rack and I’m eager to share a conversation with you. Today I am asking you all the have read the first two books in my Tales of Tarza series, which character is your favorite?

Not talking... okay I’ll share mine instead.

I would have to say that my favorite character is the one that dive-bombs my mind most of the time and that is Kero from Masquerade Assassin. She is not your average princess; and has a forceful personality and loves breaking the rules. This girl has been taking over my mind for the last ten years but I just now got to write her into one of my books.

I’m planning an entire series around her in novel form, but I have to figure out how to deal with my fear of doing such a project. It has been sitting on my to-do list for the last ten years. The book develops more each year but I find I’m scared to write something so long and mess it up. But I think I will take it one step at a time.

What are 3 reasons you fell in love with Kero?

1. She isn’t your girly-girl type and takes charge.

2. Kero has a tendency to care about others and will fight to the death to protect those she loves.

3. Super excited with her personality it is so fun and deadly

I hope you enjoyed this take into my own thoughts on my favorite character. If you have a different favorite character drop it in the comments and tell us why. Hope you all enjoy the rest of your week. Until next time.

~ Katie
