Elowynn DeMere has no plan when she flees her father's house. Only an ache in her chest that pulls her into the forest, to the cottage of the maeblec Rune. She talks her way into an apprenticeship as a “woman who knows things,” hoping it will be enough to evade the arranged marriage that would have caged her forever. If she can discover her unique brand of magic and win the trust of a familiar, she may have a chance at forging her own destiny.
Then Eithan D'Evoran, her erstwhile fiancé, rides into Rune's clearing. Armed with gifts and terrible poetry, he refuses to give up on her. And the more time Elowynn spends with him, the harder it becomes to remain convinced of her dedication to a life of independence and magic.
But learning to be a woman who knows things comes at a cost. The town is turning against its maeblec. People are falling ill, and the evidence points straight to Rune. As suspicion turns to accusation, Elowynn must choose between the life she fled, the man she didn't expect to love, and the magic that is finally becoming her own.
